Organizational Description:

The Friends of Barnabas Foundation (FOB) seeks an experienced and capable nonprofit professional responsible for advancing the organization’s mission through fundraising, networking, and communications as well as ensuring that the organization is compliant with laws, regulations, and budgetary guidelines.

The Friends of Barnabas Foundation is an international, non-governmental organization with a Central Office in Midlothian, Virginia and program facilities in Peña Blanca, Honduras.  The mission of Friends of Barnabas is to improve the lives of impoverished children in Honduras by providing high quality sustainable health care and enabling communities to become self-sufficient through health-related training and education.

 

Friends of Barnabas key programs include Community Health Development, Extended Care, Early Childhood Development, and the Little Hearts Project.  These programs provide direct medical services to children and families, individualized care for children with special needs, parental workshops, comprehensive community health training and education, and continuing education opportunities for medical providers.  FOB has an annual organizational budget of approximately $1 million US. 


Position Description:

As an international nongovernmental organization in its 22nd year, FOB is excited to add a new Director of Advancement to its Honduran leadership team to support FOB’s mission by providing leadership in the areas of fundraising, marketing, and community awareness as well as compliance. 

The Director of Advancement will assume the following responsibilities:

DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS

  • Fundraise and develop revenue necessary to support the mission and annual goal,

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications and marketing—from traditional media presence to social media with the goal of creating a stronger, more recognizable brand in Honduras,

  • Establish and maintain relationships with other organizations and businesses, utilizing those relationships to strategically enhance FOB’s mission,

  • Serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson to the media and the general public,

  • Communicate effectively with the Honduran leadership team, FOB program staff, President, and Board.


COMPLIANCE

  • Ensure that FOB is operating in compliance with all laws and regulations,

  • Beyond legal compliance, commit to ensuring that FOB adheres to the highest ethical standards possible,

  • Serve as a representative of the organization in affairs regarding government and legal matters,

  • Participate in the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Demonstrated success and 3+ years of nongovernmental program

  • Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, phone, and social media in both Spanish and English

  • Flexible, energetic, organized with attention to detail

  • High level computer skills in MS Office, social media platforms

  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff.

  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.

  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies, and volunteers.

Marketing and Communications Internship Opportunity

Friends of Barnabas is seeking applications for a Marketing and Communications Internship in the Greater Richmond, VA area.  This is an unpaid internship that provides an opportunity to be part of an international nongovernmental organization providing public health services in Honduras.

The mission of Friends of Barnabas (FOB) is to improve the lives of impoverished children in Honduras by providing high quality sustainable health care and enabling communities to become self-sufficient through health-related training and education. The Friends of Barnabas headquarters is in Midlothian, Virginia, and a facility, operated by a staff of twenty who implement all FOB programs, is located in Peña Blanca, Honduras.

The Marketing and Communications Intern will play a key role and collaborate with FOB staff in both the US and Honduras to deliver content marketing through social media as well as other platforms to expand our marketing and communications efforts.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Content creation of social media/website/other

  • Assist with the design and execution of social media campaigns

  • Carry out secondary research to analyze industry trends

  • Assist in updates/upgrades in FOB’s digital platforms

  • Participating in Team Communications planning

  • Create weekly and monthly calendars to promote FOB programming and fundraising strategies on various social media websites

  • Create and distribute content such as blogs, infographics, videos, and press releases on social media and traditional news outlets

  • Track social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas and campaigns for scalability

Experience/Requirements

  • Completed or actively pursuing 4-year degree, with coursework in business, marketing, digital marketing, communications, or related field

  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance

  • Applicant is keen to learn about the organization, willing to work hard, and committed to the mission of Friends of Barnabas. 

 

Minimum of 16 hours per week/ flexible schedule
